Evening all,

Iv had a ponder over the detailing section for quite abit and i really can't make my mind up on what to use. I have previously used AutoGlym Resin polish in the past was quite pleased with it but i know it can be better.

I tend to see alot of dark coloured cars around (black/blue etc) which you can quite clearly see that they use some sort of amazing polish or wax that make them look stunning when the light hits them that gives like my title states a "deep glass polished wet look".

I have a black metalic mk4 and i really want to get that finish to it. Could anyone be so kind to point me in that direction to get that finish?..and are electric buffers all their cracked up to be (worth investing?).

I have also heard alot of talk about "clay" in this section could someone explain what this stuff actualy does?

Thanks everyone.

have read in the stickys and in the guide/faq section aswell.

claying removes bonded contaminents, road grime, tar spots, ferrous metals, grit particles etc from the paints surface leaving it clean and smooth again ready for polishing.

to get the wet look finish your after you need to get the polishing stage spot on,its all in the prep.
vag paint is hard so the menzerna and 3m polishes perform well on these with the corresponding pads on a rotory or DA though a DA will take a bit longer to achieve the desired finish.
if you are going to use a machine polisher on a regular basis its well worth getting, machine polishers arent just for full on correction purposes they can be very handy for applying glazes and sealants, some people apply waxes via machine but i would recomend only applying liquid waxes and not paste waxes.

if you dont have any experience with machine polishing get a DA as they are a good starter machine to learn with.

I hope you don't mind me jumping in on this thread with my advice too.

Dan has given some top advice there.

If you want to go for a machine polisher with the pads and polishes, have a look at the Kestrel DAS-6, some great kits available:

http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=327&idcategory=22

I am a big fan of the Meguiar's Pads, however maybe Meg's 83 and 80 are not the best for VAG paint, therefore you may want to go with the following:

Meguiar's 105 - This will deal with any swirl marks you have with a Dual Action polisher.
Meguiar's 205 - This is one of the best finishing polishes on the market at the moment and will give you the depth of shine you are after.

As for clay, I would go with the Dodo Juice kit:

http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=264&idcategory=18

Born Slippy and Supernatural Clay is a fantastic package.

What wax or sealant do you have? Do you have a good shampoo, mitt and bucket with Grit guard to keep up the good looks once you have put all this work in? Lots of people don't realise how important the washing stage is, you could put all this work in getting the perfect finish, but all it takes is a bad wash technique to put the car back to were you started, full of swirls and not shining like it should.

Hope that helps a bit?

Chris

i'd opt for the DAS-6 Pro... its a far superior DA to anything else I have tried

Thanks Chris and Dan for the help. I have read the stickys yes but im a complete novice to the whole cleaning aspect of things and to get the best out of which ever products are out their (there is so many to choose from)...so i thought i would come along to the detailing section to get an experts opinion on it all as i am a complete noob.

My cleaning processes involves going to the ARC car wash in Bristol and spending 8 quid a time (lazy i know) but i just havent had the courage so far to give it a bash at doing it propperly to get that beautiful wet look finish to my car.

About a month ago i went to get my car cleaned then came home applied neary a whole bottle of AutoGlym resin then applied some sort of turtle wax i spend nearly 6 hours doing it but i probably went about it the wrong way as regards to what steps im ment to apply the products

So im really in need of all the products including the shampoo, mitt (could you please advise on that one to) and bucket with Grit guard  (and advise this one to)...

Thank you gents for helping me out could you also advise on which steps to apply each one.

Thanks again.

you won't achieve anything by using a car wash, even a hand car wash... you'll just undo any of the work you have done

I did a black car recently, with the right tools and patience good results can be achieved. I'd listen to dan and guy, these guys are good.

Some pics from recent black car.

Preperation is key, time is important, patience is important and knoweldge is imperative, esp when machine polishing.

I think you've forgotten to put the pics of the car up and just put a mirror on the floor
