Where can I find a real drivers road?
« on: 22 July 2010, 13:12 »
This may seem like a weird question, but I thought it best to give it a shot.
I have had my GTI for about 7 months now, and I have never really managed to “drive” the car. My normal commute to the train station is just boring town roads, and I sometimes get a blast on the motorway. The GTI is a proper driver’s car and I would love to use it for it was made for, having fun.

I was hoping someone could tell me of some good driving roads in the South East/Kent area? I live about 15 minutes away from Bluewater. Now of course I know there won’t be many great driving roads on my door step, but somewhere I could get to and back in under a day would be great. I have seen pictures on this forum of the “Evo Triangle” and it looks amazing, and just the type of road I would like to find, but that’s all the way in Wales. Now of course I will be sticking to the law and not taking any risks.

Some of you may suggest track days, and they are all well and good, but I don’t want to ruin my tyres and have to fork out for track day insurance.

May seem a silly question to some, but I really want to give my car a good old “drive”

Thanks.

PS if anyone wants to join in me on my “drivers road trip” they are more than welcome to, it would be good to meet up with some people on here and compare cars.

Do it! What's the point in owning a Golf GTI to crawl around urban-only areas at granny speeds...?

I'm lucky, because I have some deserted, well-sighted roads near me in Scotland and the last 'drivers drive' I went on may have only lasted ten minutes, but I had cooked my front brakes in that time...

Surely someone can recommend a nice road down the OP's neck of the woods?
MKV GTI | Reflex Silver | 5-dr | Anthracite 17" | Manual | Highline MFD | Cruise | Revision 'D' DV | Dirty Pipes |

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

The type of road I'm looking for would be something like the roads that make up the Evo Triangle. Or something like Snakes Pass in the Peak District. All the little county lanes that are near me can be fun, but all have high hedge rows, so you get alot of blind corners. Would love something that is challenging but in a safe way, plus some good scenery so I can get some good shots of the GTI.

There has to be something close to this near me http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=151306.0

The Romney Marsh but don't tell anyone (other than the bikers who already know).

Pop down the M20 to J10, then A2070 from Ashford to Brenzett - a relatively straight and open road that takes you down onto the Marsh. Then take the A259 towards Rye, and then just before you reach Rye take the Camber turn off. Brilliant coastal road takes you through Camber, Jurys Gap and eventually Lydd. At Lydd either pop into the Kart circuit or detour to Dungeness for a surreal experience and cod and chips at the Pilot. Then take the B2075 alongside Lydd airport and back to the A259. Take a left back to Brenzett and possibly a quick visit to the small but perfectly formed aeronautical museum. Then the B2080 to Appledore perhaps stopping at the Red Lion at Snargate to visit a pub that has not changed since the 1940's. In Appledore take a left turn onto Military Road and enjoy the drive down to Rye on a road which must have been designed for performance cars and bikes - a flat out blast with a selection of open bends and esses.

At Rye enjoy fish and chips (if you didn't go to the Pilot) before planning your return either by revisiting Camber or more directly via Brenzett or Tenterden.

Believe me, you'll enjoy it....

Luckily I'm spoilt for choice here in North Wales, as long as I can avoid the speed camera vans, which isn't easy !!

Have a look at the roads known as the EVO TRIANGLE - Top Gear use it all the time !!
