check that all the electric window switches work and that the windows go up and down smoothly. If not, broken ragulator cable, duff motor, of just clogged up with dirt. New regulator and motor £40.
Check for oil leak around the distributor. Inner oil seals tend to perish.
If you have a screwdriver take the door cards off to see the state of the membranes, if any. Two philips screws behind door handle and two either end of door card
Lift up carpet in footwells to check for damp/smelly underlay. If there is no underlay there then thats a good sign that water has been in the car.
Water ingress tend to come from the pollen filter seal going -water in passenger footwell - just silicone seal it
Throttle cable rubber grommet shrinkage and bonnet release cable shrinkage - water in driver footwell / in or under fusebox.
To test - remove scuttle pannel and pour some water over the parts.
Check the central locking if fitted, opens and closes fairly smoothly and quickly. If not, could be vac leak, or actuator pump in driver door is shot if it doesn't work at all.
Check for play in the gear stick - simple job fitting new bush kit. Check dash and instrument lights all work and fan works on all speeds.
With the fan on full, give the heat and direction sliders a good working over. Poor air speed could be that the seals around the door flaps in the fresh air box are shot - telltale sign is small bits of plastic foam coming out of the air vents.
If the direction slider doesn't work then the gear gog at the bottom of the fresh air box had slipped loose - fiddly job.
Give the front and rear big bumpers - if fitted - a good pull to check that they are still joined to the bumper frame.
On the test drive, make sure car has a bit of a kick once going past 4000 rpm. If not, coud be an air leak in induction system.
These are thing that I had to sort out on my valver.
