1.4 - More BHP?
« on: 19 July 2010, 21:36 »
Hey guys

I own a 1.4 CL and im looking for a way to get wee bit more power out of it. I know its not a great engine as it is, but im willing to try and get as much as possible out of it. I heard that putting a 16v gearbox into it will give me better gear ratios. Is this true? I also heard that a Mk3 polo G40 head help aswell. Would this give me better performance? Is there anything out of any other cars that i bolt in? Anything that i could even buy to help me out?

I asked this question on another forum, but i was told " Scrap it, get a bigger engine". Insurance is costing me over £2000 with 1 years ncb, so a bigger engine isnt an option at the minute.

Hopefully you guys can help me out.

Cheers
Matt

If you make it go quicker you will pay more insurance so save up for a year and then buy something quicker.

cam kit. It'll prob not make anymore power, but it will bring it into a more useable rev range making it seem quicker.

Whys your insurance so high though? I have a 1400 as well with no ncb's and its 1300 a year

Apparently , I live in a bad Post Code area according to insurers. Its a real kick in the butt, but it needs to be done. A friend of mine lives about 10 minutes away can insure a Mk4 GT TDI for that type of money ( plus some left over ).  :undecided:

Cheers to you guys for proper answers. I was just getting sick of being put down because i cant afford a GTI or a VR6. If i could, i really would.

Best thing you can do is give it a full service and accept its not a rocket ship, the service will make it more responsive and give you slightly better MPG. Mess with anything and don't tell the insurance then you won't be insured if you have a crash or get pulled . Save your money and buy something quicker next year and also try a specialist insurer like HIC or Adrian Flux and Bell and Elephant are meant to be good for younger drivers.
What age is yours? the earlier ones are only single point injection where as mine is a multipoint which apparently makes a huge difference.

No point in trying to improve the power. Your best bet is to get it looking good rather than waste money chasing a few more ponies. It's also worth remembering that any mods you do to your 1.4 could very easily be transferred to a gti if you upgrade in the future

It will make it more expensive to tune a small engine rather than just buying a big engine.

Also no point spending lots of money for something that will make hardly any difference. Forget about it.
