Failed MOT any suggestions?
« on: 13 July 2010, 23:10 »
H reg 16v KR

However, it failed on couple of issues but wanted to check this one with you guys.

Idle speed too high. Mine was around 1200rpm fair enough need to get the CO2 and mixture adjusted?

CO        1604                           Limit 3500
HC ppm  159                             Limit 1200

Does that seem awfully low to you?

Guy didn't have a KR engine code in his wee book. Only PB, I thought that was an 8v and that 8vs idled slower than 16vs? Or he suggested a PL but again I thought that was a 2ltr better known as the 9A?

Anyone shed some light?

Idle should be around 950. Co2 should be as low as possible.  As long as it passes the MOT why worry.  Idle speed adjustment you can do yourself. Just use a flat head screwdriver to turn the idle adjustment screw near the throttle.

check the idle switch on the throttle body, make sure the upper linkage is moving freely and hits the switch when throttle is shut.
16v idles at around 900-1000 rpm, co is best set at 2%. there is a setup guide for the 16v in the maintenance section :)

Cheers, I never worry
I have been reading up on the 16v setup/maintainance section, I hear it will make me even more attractive to supermodels :nerd:
Loads of good info so far, also discovered that tip about bleeding brakes that you need to fiddle with the load valve underneath and away to go and buy a ronson easibleed.

Just need car to pass MOT so I can drive it to the workshop(s) to get bodywork and engine conversion done.

Got idle down to approx 1000rpm and tester said he would be happy with that. Car doesn't sound happy, but a pass is a pass.

Car is being welded as I write this. Then off to get new brake pipes/ flexi's all round and new ARB pin bushes.

Can anyone advise

the really short plastic coated pipe on the caliper itself, can that be replaced too?

do you mean the metal brake pipe on the caliper? yeah its just a std brake pipe. generally if you buy a set of goodrige braided brake lines you need to remove the metal pipe completly and plug the flexi directly into the caliper anyway

Yeah that's the one, was what I was thinking as it seems to have the same connections as normal brake pipes but wanted to double check as it's safety related.

It's not been welded today
The VW gods are clearly testing me. Need to take off all the plastic arches/ trim and see what horrors lie beneath. Feeling I have to get new sill, yay.

It's not looking like I'm going to get my new MOT this week

Could break it and buy a reliable car... :undecided:
