GTI 16V WONT START!!
« on: 03 January 2005, 16:29 »
hi need help!!! i have a mk2 16valver that did run then was left standing for a while now it wont even start. I aint getting a spark and the fuel pump is not priming although I know the pump is working. Could they be linked? Nothing has been changed since it was last started so at a bit of a loss. There is no power for the fuel pump from the fuse box either? I would be well chuffed if anyone has any ideas at as to what I can try!!

from what you have said it is more than likely to be a battery problem either that or if you are not getting anything at all, but the lights on the dash come on then it could be something to do with the ignition coil. Easy and cheap fix either way.

THANKS FOR THE REPLIES!! Unfortunatley it aint the battery!! Even good old Mr AA did not try and sell me one. The coil seems to be working as it sparks when the ignition turns off. Was wandering if maybe the ecu is seeing a fault somewhere of some sort causing the ignition module to stop working etc? Can anyone tell me what relay is for the fuel pump? Many thanks for the ideas!!

Coil sparks when you cycle the ign but no spark when cranking?. I would check the distributer hall sensor. Pull the the three wire plug from the distributer and if you look at the black plastic socket on the dizzy you will see it is marked with a +, - and a o. The + should be battery voltage when the ign is on, - is earth and the o is the switch from the hall sensor. If you link the 0 and - on the wire side, there should be a spark when you make and brake the connection. If there is a spark it looks like a hall sensor fault, if no spark and the live and earth are OK, poss ign module or coil fault. If you have a spark at the coil lead but not at the plugs, check the cap and rotor.
Hope this helps.
Steve.

Right next problem!! Tried looking at the 3 wires and for some reason I am getting 2 lots of 12 volts and either an earth or 0? Do you reckon this still points to the module? Perhaps the ECU? Also do you have any ideas why there is now power supplied to the fuel pump? Could the ECU stop the feed as a fail safe!! SOOO MANY QUESTIONS....... Y r electrics so much of a ball ache!!!! THANKS AGAIN FOR ANY HELP!!

Fuel pump relay is energised when the ign system starts to spark, the relay picks up a feed from the ign coil. If you stall the engine the fuel pump stops also if there is no coil switching you will have no fuel pump. Fix the sparks and the pump will run. See if you can get another ign module to try.
