Ta, JV.

The plan is a tried and tested one. Take one ABF engine from mk3 golf ( my old car) and transplant into my late spec mk2 16v.

Transplant ABF in place of KR on stock Mk3 management.
Retain narrow track for time being.
Use mk3 cable change box.
Eventually fit the 280mm brakes I have bought.

As you read this Rubjonny is making my loom for me as I decided I wanted the car finished this year.

I am an engine transplant virgin so I'm loosing my cherry on this project....

Car has just failed it's MOT so going to get it welded MOT'd and then begin in ernest.

Will update this when I have some pictures.

Here's one to keep you goin though

Took it down to get MOT'd the other day as it's been languishing on my parents drive for the past month with no MOT.
To get about I had nicked my Ma's car and all it's starting first time, super economical, heated leather, digital radio goodness.
Now I'm on holiday, and the fact "the guilt" is setting in I need to get going on the car.

Car failed MOT on following points:-

#1 Offside headlamp aim too low ( sorted now)

#2 Centre upper stop lamp not working ( the one in the ghey spoiler has never worked in my ownership, but got a replacement tailgate)

#3 Nearside front brake excessively corroded **DANGEROUS**

#4 Offside front brake excessively corroded **DANGEROUS**

#5 Nearside front (jacking point)vehicle structure has excessive corrosion seriously effecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings

#6 Nearside front Anti-roll bar has excessive play in a pin/bush

#7 Offside (outer sill) vehicle structure has excessive corrosion seriously effecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings

#8 Centre exhaust system not adequately supported ( had fallen off it's hangar, sorted now)

#9 Front brakes imbalanced **DANGEROUS**

#10 Idle speed too high approx 1200rpm (sorted now)

Advisory Items

#1 Vehicle has only just met the required service brake efficiency . It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair.

#2 Parking brake has only just met the efficiency It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair.

#3 O/s/f inner wing corroded (nothing major, just surface and will be treated when I pull out the engine)

#4 O/s/r handbrake cable insecure (need to find the wee metal clip secures it to the rear beam)

#5 O/s/r inner wing corroded (nothing major, just surface and will be treated when I pull out the engine)

So quite the list, assuming **DANGEROUS** isn't the Jackson Album, but I know brakes are my fault as I've never done them before, didn't bleed them properly after changing the master cylinder. Lesson learned, was planning on replacing the whole system when I had the car apart for engine swap, but ho hum.

Was quite p!ssed off regarding the welding though, as paid 140 gold coins to get them done last MOT. Turns out they have patched, bodged, not seam welded and not done what they said they had  They didn't even underseal it! Looked lovely from the top, but garage has subsequently, it appears, gone bust. Good. Feckers.

So I have ordered (so far)
#1 a complete new sill to replace the bodged one.
#2 ARB bushes and droplinks.
#3 Brake flexi hoses all round
#4 25ft of copper brake lines
#5 4 OEM bleed nipples
#6 Handbrake clips
#7 Handbrake cables
#8 DOT 5.1 brake fluid

Going to get a friend, who I trust to do the welding/ tidy up underneath. They are also going to sort out the brakes etc as I'm scunnered with the whole thing. So it should be MOT'd in the none to distant future.

I will be removing the plastic trim tomorrow to assess the damage, as we all know, 90 spec trims hide a multitude of sins. I am considering getting rid of the kit completely and going skinny bumber when I get the respray done but we'll see.

wee pic of what the bodyshop left in their wake prior to me getting it sorted, this is where the drivers seatbelt attaches to...

More pics and updates to see what lurks beneath the dreaded plastic trim...

The horrors that lurk beneath 90 spec trims, I knew it was going to be bad but I didn't expect this

Previous owners "attempt" at rolling arches

So I have ordered/ collected 4x new wings front and rear plus a new sill and petrol flap panel. Have a replacement passenger door and tailgate to go on too. Let the "new car" jokes commence.

Have also ordered 2ltrs of Oak Green, 2.5ltrs of laquer, 2ltrs primer and 5ltrs of thinners too

Project ROTBOX is underway...

More pics to follow.

Collected these today.

Going to pull and trim/roll the front arches before I rustproof, prime, paint them.

Come payday, I will pay for my paint.

Then, it's on...

Ok so been a wee while since I did anything, been busy, just not on the car

Bought this little lot, it's a bit weird to be so excited about collecting paint but I am :nerd:

I also picked up this little item for a price too good to miss, those into their old skool ice will know what it is

Not much of an update but it's an update.

Been away, got engaged :D

Now back to the Golf.

Only had a few hours today so took a grinder to the rust in the rear seams.

Started out like this.

Ended up like this, sorry quality isn't great but I culdn't see the screen from the glare from the sun.
Did primer it for short term but didn't take a photo as I was falling down tired...

Powdered Mk2 anyone? Just add water...

That's it for now. Will post up some more photo's of the other things I bought for the project when I get the chance :rthumb:

Cheers for looking.

Your fuel filler looks marginally better than mine, i'll be interested to see how you tackle it. Good work so far though, mines the white GTI in the dub projects, had similar issues with the rear wheel arch once i took the plastic arch off

 Yeah, it's not project rotbox for nothing! If you see in the boot in the third to last pic you'll see I have a complete filler repair panel which I will trim to suit. Hoping to get out with the angle grinder next weekend. That's if it stops raining

More pics when I get them

Started out like this, only had an hour mind... :D

How NOT to roll an arch   (Prev' owners I hasten to add)

Looks a bit like this at the mo as had to go to work :bang:

Selection of the screws and adhesives used to bodge the big kit on ( Note the rather tasty brass screws!)

Will update more when I've done a bit more..
