The hood should only operate when the key is in the ignition so more than likely you have a broken wire there you can buy new plugs or obtain one from a scrapy case of tracing the wires not difficult. If your willing to tackle the job yourself the electrics are not a problem nor is the paintwork the worst problem sounds like the knocking unless you can source a new engine and do the job yourself I'd stay clear off it. Cost you more than the car is currently worth.

Just to confirm what Flidster has said, the key needs to be in the barrel but without the ignition on for the hood to operate, i.e. stick key in barrel but do not twist. Safety feature so that you can't take the hood down while driving.
