« on: 09 July 2010, 20:47 »
i've got some bbs wheels that need a refurb, is it ok to use paint stripper to strip the corroded finish off before a sand and repaint?

Yeah, just make sure you cover anything rubber, or you dont want it on, tyres, valves, etc

already on it with the nitro matey. but bugger me its a pain in the arse, it just doesnt seem to want to strip all the paint off. got a feeling its gonna cost so much in the stuff i may as well get them shot blasted for £15.00 per wheel. plus then i can get all for powder coated for an extra £100.00.

i wanted to do it all myself but by the time if finally finished them it could still all be a sh!t job and be flaking off within a week??  :undecided:

vr6 bbs 15's, the later 5 stud versions.

think they would look good in anth?

how much chance did you give the nitromors? i spent about have a day and to be honest a think it would take too much effort, it just doesnt seem to lift the paint from all the areas, especially inbetween the spokes!

ahh i was doing it on bbs e30 alloys

sooo lots of spokes

i found that spokes were the hardest bit inbetween like, make sure you put plenty on and wait fifteen minutes if it doesnt strip try putting a bit more on the same area :) you using wirewool?

in the end i ended up getting them professionally refurbed :) cost me £220 but am happy with the result

i wanted to do mine by myself, brought the polish and everything

letting it sit for about 1 hour max then applying more to the areas not lifting, didnt try wire wool, just paint scrapers  :lipsrsealed:.

Jesus i can see why you gave up  i'm gonna give it one last shot, might just get them shot blasted and do the paint myself as i've stupidly bought the primer and wet/dry etc already! i'm in no rush though as the wheels i have on are fine, i just fancied a little project. Plus i will also need to fork out for skinniers tyres etc.

Depends what you want to do to it, and how much of a hazard you wand to be!

Wire wool and Nitromors is a good combo.

Or for the lets get dangersious approach, a de coke wire wool drill attachment on a slow setting, although, full PPE would be preferred in that situation.

Shot blasting is good. Bead blasting is better. Unless you have powder coated wheels, then just set them on fire FTW!
