gear box oil plug rounded off?
« on: 08 July 2010, 22:14 »
I went to get my gearbox oil changed today and was told plug is rounded off so they can't do it? Any way I can get this out / a replacement.

Thanks all.

Imperial hex key.

Or weld a bolt into it and crack off the plug using that, but you'll need to be a good welder.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

So a garage couldn't get one rounded bolt off??
If it was you trying, fair enough then
I've rounded loads the only real way is to either soak the bolt in plus gas over night then have ago.
Did they round it or did you see them try and smack a smaller socket to it?
The solutions are available such as DH mentioned, I prefer to just use a dremel to create new sides of a bolt or drill across the centre like a flat headed screw driver and then find the biggest flat head screw driver and use a monkey wrench for torq.
Other aftermarket options are bolt extractors tap and die sets, never used one no need as I usually put a bit of heat onto it before trying to get it off.
Worst case I've just ended drilling the bolt out it might take two hours slowly going up a drill bit size, but I leave enough bolt shell so I can just get plillars onto the thin steel shell and hey presto thread still intact.
Or drill it right out then helicoil not really good as helicoil is not better i.e less threads, ok for non load bearing bolts!

Cheers guys, It was a garage that called me and said 'we can't do your gear box oil as someones rounded the bolt off'

I don't really have much time to do it my self as I'm quiet busy at work which is a bit of a pain, tbh they more than likely rounded the bolt off but since I never saw it before hand I can't really go pointing fingers!

Thanks again guys!

Lol when I tell you the garage it may become clear.... 'Mr Clutch' ! I don't have time to change it before my long drive, would have been nice though, I've no idea when it was done (could have been done recently as the old owner changed a lot of stuff)

I never got a clutch done there thankfully - was the timing belt as it's something I wouldnt touch my self and the old belt looked really bad and didnt want to go on the long drive on monday and have it break ! no garage around here was available :(

clipperjay gave a good tip on timing belt which is to leave old one on but cut it lengthways along the belt so half the belt remains on pulleys then slip the new one half on and then cut off old one and continue pushing on new one, he also said to set motor at tdc by flywheel and keep checking tdc as you do belt
absolutely blinding tip imo

Yeah it did sound like a great tip, it's one thing I've always crapped my self about doing my self, if I had someone that knew what they was doing watching/talking me through it I may havea attempted it :)
