I have rust on the roof of my MKV. Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this happening? I've informed my local dealer and they seem to think it'll be covered but I've heard the VW 12 year anti corrosion guarantee often doesn't cover things. The car's less than 5 years old (06 plate).

The rust is to the rear of the roof near the hatch of the boot. One of the pics looks like there's a big gauge out of the paint but it's just dirt!

I'm so pissed off with this car now, VW build quality is sh!te now. In less than a year I've had the air con compressor go completely, the airbag light repeatedly coming on because of a loose connection under the seat (I always move my seat to get in and out to stop the bolsters wearing) and now rust. If I didn't still owe more than I'd get part ex. I'd chop the damn thing in. I'm constantly thinking what next!

Did you have the car frommnew? if not, did you inspect it beforehand? Has there ever been damage/repair to the vehicle?

Highly unusual for this to happen unlessmsomething has precipitated this. I've seen older GTIs in near-mint condition without an ounce of respray/repair.

Looks like it may have been repaired at some time for that to happen. Take it to a VW or any body shop they will be able measure the thickness of the surrounding paint.

I'm taking it in in a couple of weeks when I'm free, too busy at the moment. Although I haven't had the car from new I cannot imagine what kind of accident would have necessitated repair damage to this section of the roof!

Any experiences with VW and 12 year warranty claims?

Any idea of cost to put right if not covered?

There are lots of posts appearing on here that suggest crashed cars.
Rust, pulling to left and right, things not working etc.

It would seem many GTI owners can't drive well enough to own these fine cars.

Unfortunately with roofs, no matter where the damage is, to do the job properly you have to refinish the whole panel. It could have been something as simple as someone resting something on the roof that scratched it, or vandalism, or quite a common reason is a tile falling off a house roof. I've even seen damage where a kids trampoline blew onto a car roof.

If the damage was left for too long before it was repaired - or the job wasn't prepped properly - I'm afraid rust will show its ugly face at some point.
