Ceramic Clearcoat

Was reading the latest Autoxpress where a reader had paint isssues due to bird pooh on his BMW 5 Series which led to a re-spray. It seems that the clearcoats on BMWs are very soft, just like on VWs. However, Mercedes Benz use a much harder wearing ceramic clearcoat. Now I know why our metallic C Class 350 CDI has such a very tough surface and requires the minimum of care to shine without a single swirl mark or light surface scratch.

That's PPG's CeramiClear - good stuff but difficult to respray, so repairs are often done with normal paint - even when done by Merc. I think Ferrari and Rolls use it too.

VW clearcoat is generally hard, not soft.

You also shouldnt get swirl marks if you wash your car correctly, although they are sometimes impossible to avoid. Even the hardest of laquers will have swirls, its just sometimes hard to see them.

BMW say that bird pooh can be left on at least 2 weeks before damage takes place unless the pooh particularly acidic.

I would have to ask them how were supposed to test if that particular sh!t on the car is acidic ? Do we take the pepsi birdsh!t challenge ?

Some of these car companies are so full of sh!t! Even the detailer who was contacted by Autoexpress said that this was rubbish and it was a BMW paint issue and not a sh!t issue!

I have a touran (which is based on a mk5 golf) and a golf GTI mk6 ,the touran is 2005 and the paintwork is as good as new,bird sh1t will not and has not marked it ,my golf has a mark on the side from bird sh1t,it was on for a few hours max it seems to me that the clearcoat/paint they are using now is Inferior.

Guy that valets my Golf told me that the paint on my Golf was the thickest he had seen on a VW. Only 7 months old and lots of swirls already though. Not worried though, was expecting that.

Agree with the commentc on Merc paint though. My 3 yr old ML has no scratches or swirls, and looks like a showroom car when washed. Just gleams. I don't even wax it. Amazing paint job.
