Mk1 Golf was badged in the USA (Only) as a "Rabbit" though, the Cabriolet version was always known as a Golf (TTBOMK), the Clipper version was just a face lifted update of the Mk1 Cabriolet, side skirts, wheel arches, and full fitting front and rear bumpers and was produced right up until the Mk3 cabriolet version was introduced.... there was no Mk2 Cabriolet version of the Golf, Europe, or US
It must also be said that the introduction of larger bumpers on Mk1 Cabriolets (Clippers) was to satisfy the requirements of US Federal safety legislation, the very same laws that killed off, many European vehicle exports to the US, but that's another story..
To my knowledge, many people in the UK still think that ALL US Golfs, of all Mk's are still called Rabbits, hence some confusion.
The above is a
general explanation for our US friends, and is not meant to be a verbatim account, to be picked apart!
