A little help and advice needed
« on: 07 July 2010, 08:36 »
Hi,

Well it would seam that the golf has indeed had a very hard life and being 11 years old with 124000 miles it needs some love or directions to a scrap yard. I am up for restoring the car so need some help to ensure that I am thinking correctly.

The car has failed every MOT since it could take them... also earlier in the year the nut came off the turbo and destroyed it. I replaced it with a cheap cracked Ko3 at the time which was a case of something better than nothing. Now I have just covered 2000 miles in a week and the water pump started to leak about 500 miles in and when I got back home the cam belt snapped :(

The car is in my unit now and some how or form the pistons did not meet the valves god knows there is enough of them. I am going to rebuild the engine over the next week or so.

So I have a water pump and cam belt with all the tensioners, rollers etc no worries. I want to change the turbo to a Ko3s but I am a bit thick with computers and I am having trouble finding one so any help there would be appreciated. £200 - £300 ideally. I have a 007p and green stuff air filter. I will make an exhaust system at some point.
Is there a cam I should be fitting? and what about injectors? I presume the car is 100% stock and a 1.8t 1999 (AUM?)

Also is there a good on line shop for buying tuning parts? and is there anything I really should consider to push the power when I rebuild the engine? (I will tune it)

Cheers

Lucky with no bent valves! I can't really answer most of your questions but 99% likely it's an AGU engine if it's a 99 model. ko3 turbo standard.

If 1999 reg then the engine code will be AGU, which run a K03 turbo as standard but most people tend to upgrade these for K03s turbos

The best place to find K03s turbo's is in the classifieds sections on VW forums, and your correct they go for around £200-£300. sometimes you find some on ebay but stay away from turbo's from hong kong and also ensure the turbo has the blue metal tag with part number on it to ensure its a genuine item.

Standard Cam and injectors are fine when running a mapped K03s turbo, so you wont need to change these.

You have been very lucky that your pistons and valves havent been damaged. Have you stripped the cylinder head off to ensure there has been no damaged caused?

Also when fitting a K03s turbo you will need new oil, oil filter, coolant, feedline gaskets, manifold gaskets etc etc. If you use the search feature and look for K03s fitting there is a list of parts required or look in the TPS Parts list thread at the top of the mk4 section.
