Few Questions For You Guys !
« on: 06 July 2010, 19:54 »
I have had my golf for just over 2 months and i wash it every week my collection of stuff has started grow even in 2 months !!.. I wash it with Meguiar's Nxt gen car wash.. then use Auto Glym super resin polish as its really easy to apply and buff off.. and them i sometimes finish with Auto glym extra gloss protection.. I find all the products easy to use but i just dont get a deep enough shine my car is reflex silver and the paint work is in pretty good conditon.. Is there any good other products im not rich so something that will last a while and reasonable price please..

I also have some scratches some deep and some not so deep i've used T-cut silver to no luck i no its not recommended but thought it worth a try :) i would love it if you guys new of a way i could safely remove these chips scratches im very new to wanting to sand my car !! lol

Me and my dad want to get a machine polisher but the meguiars one and that seem really expensive and the £20 on in halfords looks s**t my mate has it and all it seems to do is push the polish around rather than work it in and the cable on it is like 5ft.. Is there a reasonable priced machine polisher and do you guys use masking tape for panels ??

I have the meguiars clay bar and quick detailer i haven't used this yet but is it a good choice or are there better for that money want to spend about £30 on one ??

I use auto glym fast glass for sleaning the glass i think its pretty good.. and i use meguiars quick interior detailer for cleaning the inside its great at bringing the plastics up and removing the dust build up..

Also is there any way of covering or removing marks from the plastic on the doorcards ??

And last but not least is there a decent shampoo for upholstery and the carpet as i really want to bring them up ??

Sorry its such an essay i hope you guys can help i have read some of the stickies and found them very informative but just want to clarify..

Many thanks for your time

Dan

If you want a deep wet look then you're going to need to machine the paintwork (this will also remove your swirls/scratches). Then polish it, followed by (optional sealant) a wax. There's loads of products to choice from including Poorboys, Collinite, Dodo Juice and Chemical Guys.
I dare you will need to spend to get the look you want - but it will be worth it.

For a beginner use an osculating polisher (basically moves up and down as is spins) - although again these are not cheap (Megs G220 and Kestrel).

Masking is really to cover lights, badges etc to prevent damage from the polishing machine.

Clay is used when your paint feels rough after washing. If you can live with the scratches and without the polisher then claying is a good foundation.

Try an all purpose cleaner to remove scuff marks from doors and then dress.

For the interior either wet vac it or try Auto Glym interior shampoo.

Some stuff is covered here: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=159769.0

A wet VAX and Autosmart Biobrisk will do wonders for your interior. The waste water was black when I did mine.

The Halfords polisher may be okay, but is a rotary. Beginners + Rotary polishers = bye-bye paint.

The Dual action polishers are more expensive because they are more complex, but due to the up-down-side-to-side action, they won't do as much damage to your paint if used incorrectly.

Any scratches beyond the clear coat are going to need a spray or a filler - no amount of polishing will get rid of those.

Megs clay should be fine, just make sure it's warm, use plenty of lube (ooh-err) and don't drop it. I'm a clumsy oaf, and get through a whole bar each time I clay, as I keep dropping a piece, and have to throw it away!

I like the Autosmart WAX, though it may not be to everyone's taste. It's a hard wax, gives a nice shine when applied, and then every time afterwards when you wash it, and the beading lasts for months.

Thanks for the advice im getting the meguiars gv220 dual action polisher at the end of next month you've got to try somewhere :) do you think that polisher is good enough or can you recommend another ?? i thought autosmart stuff was just cheap as a lot of hand car washes use it my way ?? is there anywhere in particular you buy your autosmart from as its only sold to the trade ??

The Megs G220 is a good machine. Nice to work with and not too heavy.

Autosmart is relatively cheap stuff, and I wouldn't recommned all their products, but they do make a few crackers:
Smart Wheels
G101 All Purpose Cleaner
Biobrisk
WAX

WAX costs about £30 so it's never going to be up there with the best stuff, but it gives impressive results for its price point.

They do have a retail arm, but the stuff listed above is got through the trade. If you know anyone who works at a grage, detailer or equipment supplier, you should cosy up with them and ask them a favour

I also believe there may be one or two counters around the country where the public can walk in and buy the trade stuff?
