Higher mileage GTis - worth a punt?

Well I sold my 3dr 2008 Golf Gti in January to finance the renovations on our house. I bought a mint 02 Audi TT 225 to replace it, but now we have a baby on the way (already have a 6yr old) and me and my gf fancy another Golf but this time a 5dr.

We were looking at facelift diesel GTs, finances are obviously limited this time so I'm looking at higher mileage cars, (60k+)but I've realised that for the same money I can get a Gti!

We don't need a diesel really as we'll be doing hardly any mileage, so are higher mileage, ie 60k+ miles GTis OK? The ones I've seen locally start around £9.5k.

I paid £8500.00 for mine 5 months ago now, with 83,000 miles on and its perfect. If it had done 40,000 you wouldn't know!

Every 4 years or 60k.

I've just had my cambelt, waterpump and tensioners (whilst the cambelt is off its worth the extra £40 parts cost and getting the waterpump done aswell) for £325 at an independent VAG specialist. Anyone that doesnt keep receipts for this sort of work hasn't had it done.

I think car's today are meant to handle the miles.. we just bought a 57 plate with 58k miles on and it's been perfect. My logic was that it's the wife's car and she probably only does 5k miles a year so whilst 58k is a lot for a 2 year old car we would balance that out with her low mileage.

I also have a question on the cambelt - i'm now on 62k miles and haven't done the cambelt - only because the 60k miles were done by previous owner mostly on the motorway so in my mind it's not a true 60k miles etc. Does my logic make sense am I ok to leave it till we get to 70k?

I can see you logic in trying to save money, but you wont be laughing should it go wrong. You dont want to know how much more its going to cost should that snap.

+1 cheaper to do the cambelt than sort the damage if it breaks.

Yep, there's a reason VW state not only mileage but also time. After 4 years VW think the rubber could have perished enough to cause a failure, thus warrants it being replaced regardless of how many miles its done.
