interior blower fan help

anyone got any ideas?

car was fine 10 mins ago , got back in it and now the interior fan makes a horriable whirring noise and vibrates the inside of the car quite badly (enough so i can feel it through the pedals/dash/gearleaver) only happens with the fan on (irrigardless of weather the air con is running)

seems to be one problem after another :lol:

ok found a few threads suggesting that the foam in the ducting can came loose and get stuck in the blades causing a vibration and noise.

on a car with climate how hard is it to remove the inside fan? (or rarther get to it)

Open glovebox up, two screw at the top. two at the bottom (think they are the multispline), pull glove box out, but becareful as it has a wire to the side (for the lighting). This will gain you access to the blower fan behind it in the corner. Also on the passenger door, open it up and you can flop that side panel out of the dash as well to gain more access.

I may be wrong but I'm sure the glovebox has a fitting behind the ashtray, which you have to slide the centre console back to get to. Mine did, I cut this off so I can just "pop" the glovebox out when required.

and me, just heard a crack then realised it was there lol

thanks guys will whip it out tonight. deffo foam/wadding as i turned the fans up full and small shreads came out lol.

bar the car dropping a window its been pretty faultless for the last 6 months. not even used a drop of oil either (not bad for a turbo motor)

ok sort of done. lol.

had to remove glove box as above (6 in total)

to get into the blower motor (thats the box on the left, not the part on the right) you have to go under the unit and undo 2x 10mm bolts (they also have phillips heads in them to either a wrachet or screwdriver) the bottom base will come off, now unclip all the loom on the fan motor+cover and slide the front cover down  (the motor is moulded into the front of the case) you might have to bend the lower plastic dash bar to get it off but it will come down.

and jsut to show that vw cut corners the offending peice of foam is not sound deadening its a foam seal that is glued to the re-circulation flap. cheap glue melts in the heat and eventully the foam gets sucked off and into the fan. (glue on mine was sloppy as its boiling hot inside the car)

got the foam out but i now have a clogged heater matrix gonna try to hoover most of the foam out and tweezer the rest that wont get sucked up, just hope its not gotten wedged deep into the core blocking it. if not will have to leave it till the week and get to the mechs place and airline it out with compressed air.

at least the fan runs quiet again :lol:
