Golf TDI GT Sport
« on: 02 July 2010, 06:46 »
I'm in the marked for a new car and am considering a Gold TDI GT/GT Sport and would like some advise...

Whats the difference between the GT and GT Sport?
Are these as good as people say they are?
What should I watch out for?
Does anyone have one? - and if so what sort of MPG do you realise?

All help/advise greatfully received.

Rikster - do you know what reg and power in the diesel you are looking for? Also If its the mk5 Golf you are on about...

If it is the mk5, then when they first came out (2005ish) the 140bhp diesels were all badged as GT's. I had a 55 plate - and it was a good motor. Can be thirsty on oil and these use a specific one too at £14 a bottle! (all of the PD style diesels are) but 50+ mpg is easily achievable. Ensure it has full service history (early ones had the 6 speed gear boxes recalled as they had a fire recall actioned) Areas to look for..The 2.0tdi's have a common failure of the lower fuel pump - you get yellow warnings on the dash telling you of this if you have a problem (VW keep loads of these in stock, tells you how common this is!) Also watch for a very noisy radiator fan (there is 2 fitted, when the main one goes, the smaller one kicks in and is obvious because its very noisy!) Engine and handling are great though, lots of torque - power is used up quickly though so they feel faster than they really are.
VW then introduced the 170bhp GT - this is a very good engine BUT lots of reported issues with the DPF filters (these are not on the 140bhp) and can cause several trips to the dealers, especially if you only do smaller journeys.
Towards the end of the Mk5, VW changed the spec from GT to GTSport for the 140bhp (removes dual zone climate / 12 speaker stereo / different alloys) from the original spec. 170bhp models became GTTdi's with the inclusion of the better alloys, dual zone climate and better stereo.

Some of the above information is correct and some not

The facelift happened in 2006, looks very similar to the GTI front. The dual zone became an optional from 2006 and there's no 12 speaker system. The 8 or the 10, I think the GT's had 8 and 10 was optional but on the early GTIs 10 was standard but then reduced to 8 in 2006. I don't think the 2.0 TDI 140 is a PD engine. In late 2007 (2008 MY) the GT sport came out which had the gloss black front centre (like the GTI), darkened headlights, privacy glass and got the MP3 RCD300. Any other questions, ask away.

Yep MK5 2.0 TDI is deffo a PD engine

As has been said the difference between a GT (2004-2006) and a GT_Sport 2006+ is purely cosmetics. New bumper, Darkened glass form the C pillar backwards, darkened headlights like the GTI (early 2004 GT's had these then in 2005 VW went back to silver). GT Sport badging on the front grill.

170hp models identical to the 140 (basically the same PD engine) but with a DPF on the exhaust and twin chromed rear tailpipes.
2022 Tiguan R-Line 2.0 TSI 4-Motion. Nightshade blue, pano roof, IQ lights, Nav Pro, Harmon Kardon, Heated Windscreen, Heated rear seats, Wireless charging, Heads up display, dual height boot floor, Keyless with electric tailgate, Electronic TPMS, underbody protection, Area View Cameras

Thanks for this - I've been looking at facelift GT and GT sports and wasn't too sure of the difference - the only other thing I had noticed was the exhaust is showing through the rear bumper of the GT Sport whereas it's hidden behind the bumper of the facelift GT. i.e. The GT Sport looks more like the GTi.

Cheers.

Nah, you get a twin exhaust like the GTI on the GT Sport 170 and NOT on the GT Sport 140.
