Rear shock help

Hey, got my new Golf yesterday so started checking it all over to see if its up to MOT standard today

so this is what i found with my NS rear shock, firstly is the shaft supposed to be like this? and the little spacer, kinda looks like its been bodged






and secondly, the shock top that holds the spring in place has rusted, i tapped it with a hammer and a small hole appeared, not sure if i can afford coilovers right now so does anyone know where i can get these from? i have looked on ebay with no luck, not sure of any shocks to check

i was looking at getting some of those £150 coilovers off ebay anyway, would just be nice to get it through MOT before shelling out on shiny bits

that shock isnt going to last much longer, and that top mount plate isnt looking too healthy either. £150 coilies are gonna be rubbish, better off spending £150 on a std spring lowering kit and then buy a set of good quality shocks

are there any decent online shops for VW bits?
if i can get new plates for them and get it through MOT i can look into upgrading the suspension afterwards

No point the shock piston rods are well past the point of saving.

think those bits are VW only, get new circlips as well. as above though, no point putting it on those cruddy shocks they'll likely fail pretty soon.  get some new shocks at the very least, not very expensive. id also recomend new bumpstops and top rubber mounts. can get em cheap from avs:

took the other side off today, though i would add this in for the lols

the previous owners bodge of the strut top, pictures say it all but he has welded a weight to the original rusted top and then stuck a washer on the top of that
