Golf gti 1.8T
« on: 29 December 2004, 11:25 »
Hi, After recently leaving university and been plaged with unreliable cars for years I want to treat myself to a reliable, sexy golf. I have a budget of 6000 maybe 6500. Do you think I can get a nice GTI 1.8T for this with relatively low miles - im after a 3 door aswell. Also, is it really true that these engines are hard wearing and reliable - if i picked a car up that had say 80k on the clock I am looking for expensive repairs? Cheers mike.

You should be able to pick one up with 60k miles or less for that budget, but put ?300 aside for the cambelt/tensioner/waterpump if it hasn't already been done. The engines are tough as a coffin nail, its just the massive array of electrical sensors that will start to fail, but nothing that will break the bank.
Plenty of advice and information about the common faults around here if you have a look.

You might want to set aside some more cash for a remap if you want a proper GTI

Cheers for the advice mate, how much is a re-map and what BHP gains can you expect from it. Is this the same as getting a chip or different? thanks.
