defective tail lights and blinker problem...

ok so pretty much my tail lights dont work and neither do my blinkers. my brake lights work fine and my hazard lights work fine as well. when i click my blinker down to make a right turn or up to make a left the light on my dash goes on but doesnt blink for some reason and the actual blinkers dont go on. but  when i use my hazards they blink like normal. what could be the issue? i dont understand why they work when i use my harards but not my blinkers and more importantly what could be wrong with my tail lights? like i said brake lights work fine but parking lights or whatever they are called dont..
any advise on what to look at?

Just take of your steering wheel and have a good clean of your stalks and see if that helps!

could be a faulty hazard switch, all the current for the indicators has to pass thru it so if its faulty inside it can do this.
this can also happen if you have blown a fuse for the indicators. if its a CE1 car check fuse fuse #4 and #19.  since your car is a US model, its slightly harder to track down which fusebox it is, is the car a golf or jetta, and what year?

its a 92 golf gti but the title i guess says its a golf gl. but the car says gti on it.. dont really know what gl means??

gl is a luxury spec model, rather than a 'sporty' model like a gti   in the US the 2 are basically the same car though, just differences in the trim. anyway it makes no odds since we talking about indicators 

right there is only 1 fuse for the indicator/hazard stuffs which is #17, so check that first. if thats ok then you may need to replace the hazard switch or the stalks, all the current for the indicators has to go thru the hazard switch so if its gone faulty inside it can kill the indicators even though the hazards are still ok.

however since the parking lights dont work either, this would point at a stalk fault rather than fuse or hazard switch. This assumes your car even has them, the US MK2s didnt tend to have this feature

actually I'm also assuming the car is a US model, based on your location and the way you describe stuff. but I guess you could be in the forces and are in a different country, and/or driving a euro spec model

You should check the lighting earths, IIRC there's one in the boot.

so blinker problem did indeed turn out to be blown fuse #17 haha still have some detective work to do on the tail lights though.
