16v wiring
« on: 28 June 2010, 23:40 »
i thought i had the GTI on road today.

the temp light on the clock keeps flashing.
when i pump the brakes the car revs to about 3000

none of this was happening when the car was being worked on, i must have driven 10miles today and it all started happening.

i was then told by someone when looking at the car that it is not using 16v wiring???#

when i ran the loom it was instictive. ever plug fell into place next to what i should have connected to.

at the bottom of the pic above the oil cooler there is a sensor. my loom has no jack plug for it. what does it do? do i even need it?

how would even go about finding out if it is a 16v loom? i do have the connection for the isv module.

please help

thanks P

For the coolant temp light, you can test the sender in the expansion tank by bridging it's pins.

As for the brake-related revving...       ...are you sure you're pushing the correct pedal?   Check the throttle cable isn't catching on anything.

re the temp light, try swapping the two wires round on top of the oil cooler

that wouldn't help, oil cooler wires are for the oil pressure warning circuit which has a separate light.

with the light issue disconnect the plug as above and bridge it, if that helps you need a new sensor. if not the issue is with the dash temp sensor, wiring, clocks or the low level warning control relay, which is #43 above the fusebox.  if you pull the relay out this completely disables the level warning circuit. if doing that STILL doesnt help its gonna be a temp sensor, wiring or dash problem.

with the revving problem, check it all over carefully for vacuum leaks to start with. make sure the sensors to the wiring on the side of the head looks ok, there should be 3 sensors there with a red/yel, reg/green and blue/white wire.  all 3 sensors should have a black collar.

from the pics it looks liek its using 16v wiring to me, i can see the isv is plugged in and it looks liek the 16v ecu under the scuttle there. oh and make sure you have a vacuum line to the 16v ecu, I cant see it there though it could just be hidden.
