There were two BP ultimates;  the widely available 97 octane and the 102 octane which was very, very expensive and only available from a few filling stations.

The 102 octane version has now been discontinued, leaving just the 97 octane version.

Shell V-power is 99 octane, the only other fuel this highly rated is Tesco 99 octane.

I used that shell V power in my car the other day, (Mk3 1.4) and it seems to drive alot better on it than the BP stuff, was £1.32 tho... not used the tesco but it is cheaper...

Definatly not, my valver takes forever to settle in the morning with mogodons rolla cola and returns 26-27 mpg and on v power she starts straight up and returns 30 on the dot most of the time.

That would be because you run a turbo and its probably been set up to run on Super (which is what the old engines should be on anyway, even my bloody 8v) to avoid knock etc.

The OP can probably run on bog standard fuel if he chooses as the ECU should allow for that on a Mk5. As for which is best, you really need some scientific tests done on the specific car to tell which fuel is "The best"......... Or buy the cheapest one lol.

I use tesco 99 now and car feels happier on it. More power up at top specially. and decent fuel economy.
