stainless steel exhaust
« on: 26 December 2004, 21:51 »
i have a question and was wondering if anyone could answer it for me
i have recently had a full ss exhaust fitted by a custome shop that was all fine but when i went to have two new tyres fitted at my usual tyre garage the mech told me that i should have had my engine tuned to the new exhaust..... nowis this true or is this chap trying to put some sort of doubt in my mine as i alway thought that my engine management system would sort out and fine adjustment
what do you think chaps
forgot to mention its an 8v 2.0 mk3
cheers

AFAIK, if the engine will retune itself.? Same as if you fit a free flow air filter.? The air flow meter works out flow rate and density of the air, the injection system will then refer to the map to work out how much fuel is required for the current load on the engine, mix the two together and fire it into the cylinders.? The lambda sensor works out how well the mixture is burnt and backs off the fuelling slightly if required to cut down on emmisions and increase economy.

This is not gospel, but my take on how it works.

You could have the chip reprogrammed, but thats a different thing all together.

Where did you get the exhaust from BTW, I'm interested in going down this route myself.? Theres a place near where I live (outside Blackpool) that makes SS exhausts to order.

i got the ss exhaust from a company called R-tech they are quite small and in stalbans in hertfordshire its a twin dtm magnex and goes from the cat back and looks sweet as and since having the exhaust done the mot has been done it flew through and the emision test came up better than average which i suppose show that the engine management system is working fine and doing as it is suppose to do oh and by the way i'm dead jealous of your car took me ages to find mine and the one i looked at before i bought my one was a ruben red what a nice colour the car look tough i have a really good jpg of a ruben red gti if you want it
anyway any further details you can provide about the engines running with the new exhaust would be great
let me know about that pic if you have msn i'll file transfer it to you
