'97 MKIII Golf GTI 16v-Engine Cutting Out
« on: 11 August 2003, 11:03 »
My Golf cuts out when its decelerating.

This ususally happens after its been running for about 20 minutes. The revs start flying up and down and the engine cuts out including loss of power steering. Not very good at 70mph.

The engine turns over straight away but wont restart for about 90secs.

I have changed the fuel pump relay but this has not solved the problem.

I am going to change the ECU relay next as this seems to be very hot when the engine is running, the relay to the right (not sue what this is) of the ECU relay is also hot. Is this normal?

What I am confused about is when I take what I think is the ECU relay out (No. 30 written on it) The engine still starts, is this normal?

Hello. I had the same problem as you with MKIII 16V. Stalled randomly when clutch depressed and revs up and down manically before hand. If you go to sites like this you will see hundreds of requests like yours and an equal amount of answers. I went through loads of things - relays, filters etc, with no result. I then cleaned out the throttle body, which is dead easy - just need a new gasket for 60p. After that no more problem. I couldn't believe it cause I had spent money on other parts that i prob din't need. Having said that other things worked for other people so I would say that the best advice is go and get a list of things it may be from various VW sites and start with the cheapest.

PS- the throttle body didn't seem that dirty when i took it off, but hey my car now works - 2 min job.

My ignition coil had broken but this wasn't causing the cutting out problem. It was the crank speed/engine speed/TDC sensor.

Awesome GTI nr Warrington, diagnosed the problem in about 5 minutes with a computer. Total cost ?150 +VAT.

Thats why its always worth getting the car on a fault reader first!
