R Line 'Black Piano Edition' steering wheel
« on: 23 June 2010, 07:04 »
Just came across this on eBay and I like it. I've always thought there was a touch too much chrome on the stock wheel and would like to black it out a little.

Does anyone know if you can order just the 3 plastic 'black piano' parts?

At the risk of answering my own question, I went to the dealer's this morning and ordered the bottom part. Should arrive tomorrow. I don't mind the aluminium part at the top/across the wheel (where the buttons are), but the bottom bit with the GTI lettering on it always struck me as cheap looking. I will see what the black part looks like and post pix when fitted. Price was £17, BTW.

I've never liked the shiny bits either side of the airbag either, can you order the other side trim parts seperately too or does it have to be a full unit including the buttons?

From what I saw on the dealer's screen this morning, you can order the side trim parts separately. If you look carefully, it's a single part that goes across the back of the wheel. It's available in brushed aluminium or black.

The black part I ordered for the bottom of the wheel this morning should arrive tomorrow. What I particularly dislike about the stock part is the GTI centre bit, which looks like a button from a cheap hifi :embarassed:

This looks like something I would like also, but isn't the Gti badge bit part of the trim also, and the same
with the 'R' badge,so you would end up with a steering wheel that says 'R' on a Gti -unless I,m mistaken and the centre badge bits are separate ?

Already done this one mine and it's looks great.

Getting the airbag out is a pain but once it's off then it's just too screws to remove the top part (which the buttons are integrated into) and then the bottom badge just pulls off

I will dig out the part numbers and prices.

Glad I didn't order the top part then, if installation involves removing the airbag. I wouldn't feel up to that.

Yes, the bottom part does have the R badge on it, which is a pity as I don't want to look like a wannabe. I just prefer the more discreet black finish
