MK1 CAB GTi Dirveshaft Help
« on: 24 December 2004, 16:39 »
Just finished rebuilding the front suspension, whishbones, ball joints, track rods etc. etc.

Started the car and put it in gear and went to drive out the garage and no biting point on the clutch. The car has been on axle stands for the past 2 months so i though it may just be stuck. I decided to push the car out of the garage and all of a sudden the front right wishbone seperated from the suspension assy at the bottom ball joint. Jacked the car up and noticed the drive shaft had come away from the inner cv joint. (I assume this is why the clutch didn't appear to be working.

I assume that when i was rebuilding i must have managed to dislocate the drivers side drive shaft from the inner cv joint.

My question is can i just push the driveshaft back in the inner cv joint or do i need to strip the inner cv joint to get things working again.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

There should be a circlip on the end of the drive shaft that should positively locate it in the bearing. It usually just needs a sharp tap to knock the bearing off the driveshaft however with all that weight on it, it will just pull out. Make sure the circlip is still on there and simply push it back in. Make sure you can't pull it out again easily.

If the bearing races go too far out of alignment, the ball bearings can fall out but as long as it has stayed reasonably straight you should be ok.
