Advice on new gearbox
« on: 22 June 2010, 20:04 »
Hi all, I am after some advice and thought this was the best site to ask on.

I have just had some really bad news, about my lovely Oceanic green Golf GTi Turbo. There was an oil leek and clunking sound, so I took it to my local garage to get fixed and unfortunetely I have been told the worst. I need a new gearbox and clutch.

I have only had the car a year and a half and it has always been very reliable and therefore I have never had to get any major work done to it, until now. So what I am asking is how much should I expect to pay for a reconditioned gearbox and clutch + fitting for my Mk 4 GTi Turbo.

I have NO idea what to expect to pay, as I have never had to deal with any problem like this before. So any ideas what price I should expect to pay and/or any places I should go to to buy the parts myself that could save me some money.

I would greatly apprecite anyones input. Cheers.

Congratulations on owning the best colour mk4 :afro:

prices vary wildly from garage to garage.. ring around for a few quotes would be my advice. Where abouts are you? I could possibly recommend some decent specialists in your area.

hi there, i looked at this because i'm currently repairing my gearbox at the min, and to be ohnist i was having a nosey lol.

But on a up note i didnt realise that oceanic green was a sort after paint colour, as thats what mine is  am dead chuffed to find this out lol.

oh and about the box ive managed to grab myself a bargain of a box for 50 quid, but normally i think your looking at 200-250 plus depending on the condition, milage traveled etc. plus labour plus your clutch!! i'd ring round a few garages and get a few different quotes b4 u go ahead.

also i dont know what peoples feeling on clutch kits are on here and flywheels but mine had a dual mast in, which i have just replaced today with a solid flywheel conversion, (was much cheaper and by all accounts the fly wheels are prone to failure). yours might not have a dual mast in it, as you cant tell till you get in there apparently.

Ok, I was given a price by the garage that has my golf and it was.....

£475 = for a recon gearbox with 12000 mile/or one year warranty
£20 =  oil
£330 = New clutch with Flywheel
£35 = for Release ....... something as I can't read his handwriting
£300 = Labour

Total £1160 + VAT

I asked if they would do it for £1000 cash + VAT, which he agreed too. So I excepted as I thought it was a good price.

What do you folks think. Is it a good price or not.

What I did find out is that the gearbox on my car was not the original one, which I was not told by the previouse owner that it had been changed, as according to him everything was fine and the car had had no major work done to it at all

will be release bearing

Clutch kit seems a bit expensive compared to this...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK4-CLUTCH-FLYWHEEL-KIT-1-8-TURBO-97-04-150bhp-/130368275508?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e5a8e0434

comes with the flywheel & clutch kit including the release bearing

I only paid £125 labour for my clutch to be done but that included the box being taken off completely so same thing really

How many hours labour are they charging?

Yes the clutch does seem a bit expensive compared to the one in the link you gave, oh well nevermind. I am guessing that considering I got them to knock off £160 taking it down to a £1000, it isn't that bad a deal.

The labour was originally at £300. I am not sure how many hours it is for though.

Thanks mate, but unfortunetely its too late, as I have already agreed with them to do it and they have gone ahead and ordered the parts, otherwise I would of had it off you.

Thanks again anyway.

P.S
I couldn't reply to your pm as when I used the search to see why I couldn't find my pm, I came across a post that said until I have posted 10 x I won't be able to use pm.
