whats it for?
 whats it do?
how do you no if its seen better days?
 ect.

It senses when the engine pre-ignites, ie pinking. The ecu receives a signal from the sensor and retards the timing until the pinking stops. Very hard to test without a scope, usually substitution is the way to go.

cool, thanks steve, all i new about it b4 is that:
its on the side of the head (above the gear box) connected 2 a whire,
and u got 2 tarqe it up rite, cos if u dont its fookd.
and is a bin bag job.

The knock sensors are usually fitted on the block, what engine do you have?.

yes it is the block,  near where the water pipe gos in our out,
its a digifant in my gti n 1.6, in my driver
