Induction Kits!
« on: 10 August 2003, 13:39 »
Which is the best induction kit for a standard mk3 16v?
Every 1 seems to have K&N or Piper but what about Ram Air are these any good?

I am thinking about fitting a K&N induction kit and air filter. What extra performance can I expect and how much are they?

Induction kits will only give you a few extra bhp, you usually need to get the timing alterd to achieve this though (i dont know if this aplies to cars with airflow meters as it might alter the timing automatically).

Well i have been looking for one and they range from ?50 to ?90

What they do is force more air into the engine so if you have your car running a bit rich your gona get a bigger bang which means more power. You could run it as is but you will probably lose a bit of top end power as there will be too much air going into the engine and not enough fuel.

golfvr6 - what the induction roar like on the K&N and do you get a increase in the exhaust note?

Most of the filters on the market are exactly the same type of design, I prefer K&N purely because they have been making air filters for donkeys years and must have learnt a thing or two in that time. I would say you ideally need to make a sheild to stop the hot air from the engine being drawn into your filter, some plastic sheet cut to shape would be ideal.

I thought i would need a sheild on my VR6 , but the filter is right in wing and i haven't had problems with drawing in hot air.

i decided on not getting a induction kit in the end as i found lots of information on the net which said you can actually lose power around town if u dont have a decent heat shield.

So i bought a Ram Air direct replacement filter instead and have noticed a big improvement lower down the rev range. Before i used to get a small surge at 3 and then it would surge big time from 4, now though you hardly notice the surges as it pulls smoothly all the way to 7!

Best ?25 i have spent on my car so far!

These heat shields are they available to buy or is it a home made job.  If you can buy them where would I get 1??

I have seen plenty of cars with a heat sheild on them. But on my car i bent the bracket so the filter sits right in the wing. Does the job for me  ;)
