Mk2 Scirocco questions
« on: 13 June 2010, 17:12 »
Has anyone here owned a mk2 Scirocco before? I've been looking at a few online, mostly 85 onwards 1.8 8v GT models. Is this engine closer to the mk1 or mk2 GTI engine? I'm thinking mk1 because of the carb but want to make sure. How are they for rust? Any particular rust traps to look out for? Any common problems that should be checked for? Any other info would be great too. Thanks in advance

It's a Golf2 Driver engine.  *shrugs* nothing to see really.  It's an elderly car now, so look out for pox everywhere.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

I thought the 1.8 mk2 engine used kjet or digifant electrinc injection and only the 1.3 and 1.6 used carbs?

Late mk2 drivers used 1.8 with carb, same as mk2 GL.

Check if fuel filler neck has been changed?
They were common to rot and put lots a sh!t in your tank.
then you'll have endless running issues.

apart from that they were pretty sound. my K plate one had no rust at all, just bad paint from a previous respray.

the 1.8 GTII's were pretty high spec (central locking and elec windows) and were carbed with around 90hp. The late 1.8 Scalas were K-jet injection with 112hp (as the mk1 golf and cabby GTIs). 16v's were mostly sold on the continent. A GTII with a correctly set-up 3234DMTL carb will be pokey enough mind you!

chassis wise much of the platform is mk1 golf

I don't think a semi will give the same results
