serious problems
« on: 18 December 2004, 23:13 »
i have this posted in mk3 topics so sorry if ur reading it again. Hi ive been having serious problems with my mk3 1.8 GL and is wondering if any one can help or has had similar problems. The problems are that in the morning first thing when its wet or cold it takes several attempts to start. Once started though it tends to run fine. The other problem is that mostly in the rain when accelerating i will loose all power and the engine cuts out or the dash lights dim and i have almost no power so im almost coasting. At these times i usually have wipers, heaters and stereo on not sure if this effects it though. It cut out once and would never start so the AA guy came out and said maybe a loose connection but wasnt sure. so i took it to my local mechanic who run a ecu diagnosis and said nothing was wrong but said ther starter was sticking so replaced it. this has still not resolved the problem so has anyone got an idea. any help is greatly appreciated as i almost died when it cut out going down a hill will not brakes or steering

Problems associated with rain and damp usually point to ignition. You may have a hairline crack in the distributer cap or a problem with the HT leads.

thanks for the reply so do you think i should replace them both or check them out first. If i was to check the distributor do i just unscrew it and put it back in the same place (sorry dumb question) and any other things i should be looking for like the fuel systems that could be related? cheers

Beru is a very good name in replacement parts

i've used them before for bits n pieces. prices on the site inc VAT already & postage is pretty cheap. and delivery times are good.
