USB stick not recognised on RCD510 - why?
« on: 12 June 2010, 18:34 »
Searched topics and can't find anything specific to my question.

Decided to get a USB stick in addition to using iPod, SD card and CD's.
So, got an 8GB Sandisk cruzer blade; formatted it FAT32, put a few albums on to try it, music files are MP3, 320kbps arranged in folders, when inserted nothing happens, no error message but media is not recognised. Read manual and can't see anything else in there that I'm missing [apart from a few grey cells]
Anyone know what the problem might be?

i'd suggest to try reformatting it again and just simplify it by putting just one MP3 on there

Are you sure its formatted as FAT32, I found that Xp,VISTA and 7 didnt want to do it and I had to download a free FAT32 formatter utility.

I assume it does actually detect the USB stick when plugged in and tries the puts up the words initialising on the screen?  Does the memory stick have any lights and do they start flashing?  Have you tried re-seating the MDI cable in its connector?

That's exactly the same memory stick that I've bought for mine, but I don't get my car for another 3-4 weeks. Hope you get it sorted before then!

Well I use a 2GB USB flash drive on my RCD310. WinXP will only format these at FAT32 so that ins't a problem. The MDI is supposed to read Windows Media Playlists *.wpl and other formats. I have 285 mp3's in 16 different artist folders and I made a wpl to list them. When I first inserted it into the MDI lead I just pressed the MDI button on the set and it all played perfectly. I have it set to MIX FLD to mix all tracks.

Now this as worked great since I've had the car (4 months). I've noticed over the past couple of weeks that the tracks weren't very random, in fact it was stuck on one of the sub folders. I formatted the drive again and reloads all files and folders and it still gets stuck on one folder. I've removed all folders and put all the mp3's on the root and removed the wpl now they all play randomly.

I have my music in A to Z folders due to the 1000 folder limit in the root, one mp3 in the root as my 500gig drive doesnt resume, really annoying.  Pressing mix as soon as it starts seems to just randomly play the first folders sub folders. It might be that I have to change to one root folder with A-Z inside to see if that cures it, playlist might be interesting as its really annoying its not random, is there any simple way to put all your music in one playlist and just stick that in the root?

When I had my Scirocco, there was issues with the RCD510's not recognising memory sticks over 4 or 6Gb. I wonder if that is still the issue..
