looking to buy a golf gti...?

Hi all
am currently looking to pay approx 4k for a golf gti,just seen this in Trader
VOLKSWAGEN Golf GTi Anniversary ,
P reg. Blue, 2 lady owners from new, only 60,000miles, alloys, all Anniversary refinements, tax March 05, MOT Feb 05, immaculate, FSH,. ?4,000 . ono.
does this seem about right price,also what is the performance on these cars?

if its an 8 valve then it will be putting out 115bhp
if its a 16 vales then it will be putting out 150bhp
if its a vr6 then it will be putting out 174 bhp

Are these the figures you are after??? or do you want others???

Thanks for that,those were the figures im after.I've never been in/driven a GTi so this really helps.What does the Anniversary edition have over the standard GTi?

different seats, different gear knob, wheels (16" not 15"), red calipers, red seat belts, red GTI badge instead of silver

What is the power output of the new mk1111 1.8 gti,maybe worth me spending the extra as S reg's are selling around the 4.8k mark

it really depends which model.. the 98 1.8 is slower than mk3 16v.. the later one is about the same..

It depends on what you want mate, both are good cars, obviously a mk4 will be more refined have more safety features, and will probably be less mileage and wear on it.

Depends on what you want out of your car, and what money you have to throw at it!

Sorry to put the mockers on this, but, the Mk4 1.8 is the same engine as in the Audi A3/A4 and Passat - 1.8 20 v 125 brake.? IT was REPLACED in the Golf with the exact same unit that was fitted into the MK3 Golf GTi 8v.? This engine is a development of the original 1.8 unit in the late MK1's and all Mk2's and guess what, its STILL being used in the Beetle AND the latest MK5 Golf.? The Turbo model would be nice, although I personally would be put off by the miles, but thats me, I'm not buying it.

I'm on my 4th 8v and I like it. There are some horsepower mad posters on here that rave about 16v this and 16v that.? It all depends on how you drive at the end of the day.? If you are into traffic lights grands prix and using the upper reaches of the rev band on a very regular basis then get a 16v.? If you drive usually below 3500 rpm with the the odd excursion above that for overtaking etc then buy the 8v.? If you don't mind the fuel bills and want the best of both worlds then get the VR6.

I looked through this site myself and there is loads of useful infomation in it.

Going back to the MK4 question, don't forget the derivatives of these cars:? Seats' Toledo and Leon and of course VW's Bora.  These three and the MK4 Golf are really well screwed together and a huge leap in build quality over the MK3.  The 1.8 20v unit would have to be revved to geth the best out of it, as I said before, it comes down to how you drive but also the amount of cash in your pocket.  From what I have read the 1.8 20v is a bit sensitive to cambelt snaps, if it goes then the engine is apparently destroyed and according to some websites un-rebuildable.  No doubt someone might know better and I will be corrected, which is OK because either way you get the benefit which is a good thing

Good luck with it, whatever you get just enjoy it.  Its the car that spawned ALL the others.

Thanks very much for info mate.I've recently sold my vectra gsi so dont really want v6 fuel bills again,but i've always fancied a golf gti.Dont want to drop too far down on power,but thought the mk4 golf gti was pushing slightly more than 125.May actually go for a mk3 16v now,but still undecided lol.Thanks again mate,very much appreciated.
