New windscreen

En route back from London the other night I got a stone chip which eventually became a 10 inch crack in the screen. 

Phone Admiral, £70 windscreen excess, fair enough, but they say that I have to use National Windscreens (I wanted to use Autoglass) and because the car is over 3 years old they won't fit the proper VW windscreen, it will be "their own" glass.

Does anyone have any experience of using National and having non-genuine glass fitted? I am guessing the glass might be made on the same production line but just not stamped with the VW logo?

Shame, fella. Will their be issues with the light/rain sensor on the replacement? 

Same happened to our A3 about a year ago, a 'non-standard' screen was fitted.

The tinting wasn't exact on the replacement - but you wouldn't notice it without someone pointing it out - and we noticed a weird distortion around the bottom of the screen.

You'll need to mention that your windscreen is blue tinted. This has changed in later models.
 
I would ask National Windscreens if they would get the screen from VW even if you have to wait a little for it as more than likely they won't have a blue tint screen in stock.

I had a massive rant going on when AutoGlass wouldn't give me a VW windscreen. Cut a long story short I got a non VW one (blue tint and everything as I have an early GTI, had to send them away first time as they turned up with a green one despite me telling them I have an 05 GTI which is blue) and its IMPOSSIBLE to tell the difference unless you look for the logo, the glass is no different to the one I had before and had no problems with light or rain sensors.

You shouldnt have any problems.

Exact same thing happened to me last month, a chip at the edge of the screen which grew within seconds to a long crack. I used National Windscreens and had a non-VW screen fitted. They look the same......but they aren't. Mine had a graded sun tint at the top. Apart from that they look the same.

Spoke to my insurance company, they said they they only replace with manufacturers glass if the car is under 3 years old. I asked if I could use another supplier who would fit genuine glass, but they said they would only pay for the screen if National did it.

Fitting is on Saturday, so we'll see how it goes.

That indicates that your windscreen has previously been replaced with an incorrect one.
All MY06 GTis came with blue tint glass as standard.

Not necessarily, he might have just been on the limit of when they changed the tint. You will be able to tell as 9.5 / 10 your new replacement windscreen from any windscreen place like AutoGlass etc wont be a VW one so if its got the VW logo, I would be my mortgage that its the one that came out the factory.

The screen change started with the MY07.
Your theory would only be feasible if his car was a 56 plate. He has an 06 plate.
