Loosing power problem.
« on: 17 December 2004, 12:31 »
I own an 87 16valver.

Its been fine for months but in the last week it seems to have all gone pear shaped.

First i sprung an oil leak.  I found out that the oil temp sensor had gone and was pi55ing oil out of the top.
I replaced this part and reconnected the wires.
This now seems to work fine.

my problem now is that when i put my foot down at all (from cold) the engine misfires and splutters and kangaroos.  If i ease off the throttle it starts to build up revs again.

once the car is warm it eases off.  But this morning its been worse than ever.

I think it may be something to do with a power drop.  I have cleaned my dizzy cap and checked the ht leads.
Ive also checked the earth strap.   These all seem fine.

I wonder if it has anything to do with me replacing the oil temp sensor.

If anyone has any ideas.

It would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

when you start the car from cold. will it idle steadily straight off on its own or will it splutter (maybe even stall) for about 30sec?

i have a similar problem where every morning when i start the car i have to sit for about 30s & hold the revs at about 1500rpm otherwise it just splutters and misfires etc. it only does this on first start after being left for a while

my problem is a fuelling problem, im changing the lift pump (the one in the tank) at the weekend as this is quite noisy and im thinking that this is struggling to provide the fuel to the main pump

when i start the engine in the morning it starts ok and usually revs to 1400 ish.  When it drops down to 1000 revs the tacho needle seems to go up and down varying quite alot.

the revs keep going up and down for a while then it seems to level out.

Then when i drive away its fine up to about 3500 revs.
Anything over that and it starts to judder and struggles to accelerate.

Ive been out and had a look at it.  I think i May have solved the problem.

having played around with the wiring to the oil temp sensor i had managed to pull out one of the other wires accidently.

When i drove back after work it went much better.

The true test will be tomorrow morning.
If it runs ok then the problem will hopefully have been resolved.

Ill be re doing the electrical connectors to see if that improves the situation.

ive got a mk4 gti, mine coughed and spattered, it had alot of simalar problems like yours, i had a new air flow meter fitted and all is well, so if your car has a air flow meter i would have a look at that as well.
