Looking for a decent camera
« on: 07 June 2010, 12:48 »
Hey guys, going to india in a months time and want a camera to take with me. The problem is i dont know what to take, a dslr is the best choice in terms of photography fun but i dont fancy lugging one around with me all the time which kinda makes me think that a sony cybershot would be a good choice, just wondering if any of you knew of a good midground camera with dslr like control but also the point and click option for just randomly photographing us on a tuctuc or what not.

cheers, sam

Depends on what sort of budget you have.
If you want the convenience of a compact camera with the feel of a DSLR, then you're looking at so called "bridge" cameras.
They are a good stop-gap, but ultimately if you're into photography, you'll be wanting to get a DSLR anyway, so it could be seen as a waste of money.
But that said, if you only have a month till your trip, that may not be enough time to get to grips with a new DSLR anyway (although auto mode tends to be quite good).

Anyway, you could try something from the Fujifilm Finepix range: http://fujifilm.co.uk/consumer/digital/digital-cameras/d-slr-long-zoom
or from Olympus http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/29_97.htm like the SP565 UZ. My dad has one and it's pretty good.

I would say, don't spend more than £200-250 because by then you're into DSLR territory.

As dubfan says, you really want a bridge camera, pretty much all PAS camera these days, let you change the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO the same as you would on a DSLR (not with the same range though) the only other item you're going to need control over is the white balance.

Personally I wouldn't touch fuji as there colour balance is generally shocking, of the top of my head i'd be going for the powershot G11 or the Nikon P100, these are both in the entry level DSLR price bracket though, but with versitile glass.

The important points to consider would be, what batteries?  If it uses a bespoke battery, can you charge it in your hotel?  Memory, what sort, and can you transfer images off during the trip as you'll probably fill up your cards quite quickly, lastly how robust does it need to be?  when's the monsoon season are you heading to the beach etc?

What you looking at budget wise, as you could be happy with a coolpix or a powershot is

I have a fore-runner to this current model:

Which I would highly recommend for anywhere a bit 'adventurous'.  I've taken mine snokelling on the Great Barrier Reef with no ill effects, even if it did feel VERY odd dunking a very ordinary looking camera in the sea!  What could possibly go wrong, eh?

If you have more cash to play with I have seen some utterly stunning results out of Olympus PENs:

Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
