Polished rim on MIM deep dish wheels
« on: 06 June 2010, 20:19 »
Hi guys

I dont really frequent this section as im lazy when it comes to car cleaning...

BUT!

I spent about 2 or 3 hours cleaning my MIMs today. I'm not happy with the polished dish, as although its shiny there are many 'speckley' blemishes sitting on the surface.

I cleaned the whole wheel then went about Autosol'ing the polished (unpainted) rim. The blemishes sit slightly proud of the surface, and despite my aching arms & shoulders (and not to mention 2/3 of the Autosol tube used up) the b@starding marks wont come off!

Before:

After:

You can just make out the blemishes on the dish if you click on the pic and make it 100%

Any idea what can be done about the marks? And what products can be used to reduce cleaning time? I used a cheap wheel cleaner, it was crap!  :lipsrsealed:

cant really see in the pics but theres proberly a bit of pitting going on, Aquartz do a product called iron cut which will remove any metals imbedded in the wheels, then polish them and seal them with collinite 845,476,megs mirrorglaze#16,fk1000p.

cheers guys. looks like theyre pitted, so will look out for this 'iron cut' if fine wet&dry doesnt work. will i need a polisher for iron cut or can it be done by hand?

they definitely need sealing as i cant be doing this everytime i clean the car

i have the issue with my polished centre caps and even my polished engine if the car is left stood for an amount of time, i use jetseal and regular wax to seal them but i still need to autosol inbetween doing all this, aslong as you dont get lazy and keep on top of it is should never need wet and dry sand paper again

the iron cut is a liquid and you just spritz it on the rims and it changes colour when it comes into contact with ferrous metal, it basically disolves the metal pitted into the surface and aids its removal, if you rub it down before you do this you will run the risk of either flatting it off but some will still remain and will continue to corrode or you lift it out of the hole and spread it around the rim with the wet n dry causing deeper scratches.

nice advice but iv never personally had that issue and using a ultra fine wet and dry will leave zero scratches, just a dull finish which will transform once you get busy with the autosol
