Y Reg GTI Starting Issues
« on: 16 December 2004, 11:56 »

I've just become a member onto this website, through a mate a work with called Adam B.  Thinks it may help me if I ask the question here as VW can't answer me!

Just wanted to ask for some general advice on a problem I've had for quite some time.  Its in relation to starting the engine, not always when its cold, in fact its sometimes worse when it has been running for a short trip to the shops.

When I turn the ignition the engine will try to start and I can feel it wants to but its like the engine isn't getting the juice it needs to kick in, so sometimes a tease of the accelerator will do it.  However most times it just gives up and dies.  Leave it for a second or two and then try again and it'll work, but just sounds rough and not in time.  This happens say once or twice a week and so is bearable but not good.

Whilst the car was still under warranty, it went into the dealers who had it for two weeks while I was on holiday.  They couldn't find out what was wrong with it, but suggested it may have been something to do with the fuel flow filter and so replaced that.   Two weeks after picking the car up, the same old problems again, however as you guessed it the warranty has now run out.

Does this sound familiar to anyone and would you have any advice?

Kev

Doesn't sound like a common problem but I'll see what I can find on the subject. What engine do you have ? Also.. run a couple of tanks of optimax through it to see if it makes any difference.

Okay, started looking then realised I probably know the answer already. Replace your temperature sensor (sender). If that was faulty you'd get the EXACT symptoms that you describe, and the dealership wouldn't find it because it doesn't log anything to the diagnostics (add to that, that most dealership technicians are incompetent YTS trainee corsa driving chav scum).
You may have noticed a poor MPG, also related to this.
If that doesn't cure it.. then I guess I'll go back to the drawing board.

Kev,
Tell them you want the car in the garage at their expense and not returned again until mended.
Write a firm letter to the dealership. They can't wriggle out of fixing this just because it's taking a long time to sort out. If the problem started when the car was in warranty and they were notified and given chance to address the issue, it remains their problem until solved. You also have additional statutory rights under the sale of goods act, which extend beyond your warranty.

Yep, nothing to stop you suggesting which bit to change out as they clearly don't have a clue. Give me a shout if they kick and scream about sorting it out - you need their agreement to foot the bill IN WRITING before you give them the car (fax or email will do).

I had a similar problem about a year ago, which turned out to be the temp sender.
