I test drove the GTD before making my decision to go with the GTI. My experience was that it was a cracking car and drove superbly. The only reason I didn't get one was due to my short distances to work and back, and the potential problems with DPF and EGR valve as a result of this. I've owned two diesels, a Civic 2.2 and my current Alfa GT, so no axe to grind here. GTI/GTD - both cracking motors, think yourself lucky to own one or the other

I think it talks about it in the manual/broucher. The mk6 does not suffer as bad as the mk5 as VW have comented as such in magazine letter replies but its still an issue with DPF. I even think i posted about it when you were trying to decide about the GTD.

Can you expand a bit on the DPF snoops?

Page 274 of the manual iirc it says to not just use for short jouneys. What use to happen is it collects the soot particals. If you did not do a more or less constant speed iirc they use to reccomend 40mph for 15 miles every so often the DPF use to block and you had to get the dealer to clean it. I think its better on the mk6 new engine and does not need such a long journey to clear it but cars fitted with DPF need a run out every so often to clean out the DPF or it blocks.

Agreed, dealer even commented on it when I was test driving the GTD. Luckily my Civic and Alfa GT were/are non DPF cars, which is why I picked them. I keep the Alfa running sweet from an EGR valve point of view with Millers Diesel Power Sport 4, which seems to do the trick

DPF's regen when they soot up which causes loss of power and a bit of smoking through the exhaust. In normal distance running this is minimised. As Snoopy says, if they block, then it's a dealer fix/clean

Think you'll find it has:

Engines
– Front transverse-installed engine
– 2.0 litre/170 PS (01) (125 kW) common rail diesel engine. EU4 emissions standard (EU5 compliant),
four cylinder in-line engine, four valves per cylinder, aluminium-silicon alloy cylinder head, toothed
backlash compensator, intake manifold with electric continual tumble flap control, electronically
controlled common rail direct injection system with Bosch high pressure pump (up to 1800 bar)
and 8-hole piezo injector units, pre-supply electronic fuel pump, oil cooler, intercooler, exhaust gas
recirculation, additional coolant pump, turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, catalytic
converter and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)

Excerpt from the VW GTD brochure. DPF's became the norm for Euro5 compliancy
