Air-Con?
« on: 04 June 2010, 16:23 »
Whilst enjoying the good weather over the past few weeks i can't help but feel that my Air Con isn't cooling the car enough, even on low setting.

Putting my hands up to the vents it's cold but not freezing. Not sure if my mind is playing tricks on me or if the AC in my Mk5 was colder. tempted to put it into VW to see if there is a problem.

your thoughts??

It should be cooler but not freezing. It should drop the inside temp to about 5C.

In the past I've never thought that aircon was necessary in the UK as you just open a window but I've found this quite useful as it its been quite warm in the UK recently.

Not sure it's even cooling the inside to that temp. The main fan seems to come on and stay on full blast even on a journey of about 40 minutes.

I was just thinking the same today, daviescotland. It's okay, but nothing more. Better than a Mini Cooper's, though.

My aircon works a treat. Have had it on all the time since I got the car. Maybe that's why I get lousy fuel consumption.

Mine's absolutely fine, so long as the fan is running above minimum.  It can get too cold.

i'm a tight arse so i'll only turn mine on when i feel really really hot, and i can put up with some heat, i really like it when it's warm.
it's the first car i've had that has AC, so i don't know how it compares with other cars. i do feel a bit cold when it's turned on after a few mins. i'm used to opening the windows a little bit and just driving with the breeze whizzing through. at motorway speeds the noise is too loud really so with the new AC i'll turn that on with windows closed and when coming off the motorway open the windows again.

yesterday whilst driving with the windows open a tiny bit, maybe 3cm, a wasp somehow found its way inside! i almost pooed my pants. i decided to pull over and i ended up opening the window fully and it decided to fly out on it's own accord. it's never ever happened before in any other car i've driven. i don't know whether it was just a freak occurence or maybe the car's unique aerodynamics may have somehow sucked the wasp in, makes me think twice now about openin the windows now, maybe i should use the aircon more...  :undecided:

Correct, mine can drop by 5 mpg with the aircon on. I've cruised on the motoway and its shown 58.1 on the MDF I put the aircon on and it slowly comes down to 53.3 mpg. I knock it off after a while and it slowly goes back up to 58.6 mpg. And don't give me this bull that the aircon doesn't affect fuel con it does. You are driving a compressor that can take 5 bhp or more of the engine so its bound to drop the fuel con.
