Sound options...
« on: 04 June 2010, 10:25 »
So got my gti yesterday - have to say loving it at the moment and the drive back was 'interesting'

However the only small downside to the car is that it only has 1 cd slot and no changer / ipod / mp3 etc.

What do you guys typically do for OEM sound options - I'mguessing I've got options of...

1) Buy a RCD300 with MP3 player (my one doesn't have mp3)
2) Buy a 6 cd changer
3) Buy some kind of ipod interface
4) Buy a sat nav unit (does that have mp3?)

Which route have you guys gone down and which would you recommend?

Thanks for your help. :)

If your serious about sound then the only proper alternative is aftermarket. I've got an Alpine HU with a small sub and amp. You cant compare it to a standard OEM setup.

I have to agree that the only way for decent sounds is to go aftermarket.

The OEM iPOD dock is a waste of time and money.
The OEM speakers can all be bought for less than £50, so imagine how cheap and nasty they are to actually make
The OEM head units specifically have VW sound processing to reduce the sound at certain volumes and frequencies as they know the stock speakers can't handle them
This is why an aftermarket head unit will sound better until the volume is wound up.

Even cheap aftermarket speakers are leagues better than the MKV OEM speakers.

The MKVI dynaudio system speakers are much better, but would cost you more than a decent aftermarket set-up.

I have an aftermarket aux in connection in mine but I won't recommended it as another person on here got the same kit and it wouldn't work. We couldn't figure out why.
A full on aftermarket headunit would be a good start.
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

Hmmm tough one, as I keep all my car sound system OEM - as opposed to inputs like CD players which don't bother me as they are typically hidden away.

In terms of ipod connections is the denilson the best bet (apologies if I misspelt the name there) ?

Have any of you guys bought these "box units" from china which you put in the glovebox - they allow you to play music from SD cards, USB memory sticks or an AUX input (ipod) ?

They look like good value...

The OEM iPOD dock is a waste of time and money.

Without question THE worst £155.00 i have ever spent after having this fitted to my GTI by VW.

The worst Ipod connection bar none,Does'nt charge the Iphone (Although i was assured by the Salespig That it does). There is no display to show what you are playing on the radio interface,Even the ipod screen goes blank and only shows a VW badge.

All in all.....utter crap.
