Hi

Just last night my 1991 1.6 Golf Driver (carb engine) has the following problem.  It stalls unless I keep my foot on the accelerator!  As you can guess it stalls when I have to brake and stalls at idle.  Not that it has an idle now as it just drops and cuts out.  The battery is fine as the electrics still work.

Does anyone know what it could be?

Before it all happened I had just pulled off, went into first then second, braked then back into 1st (by accident).  The engine revved alot, I realised I was in first so put it into second (as I didn't actually brake to a stop.

I'm just thinking might I have blew something?  A fuse/relay/valve?

Sh!t in the carb or a knackered ignition amp module maybe ?

edit: thats assuming you've checked simple things like plugs/leads/dizzy cap/rotor arm/points.

On a more helpful note!
You most probably still have the original pierburg 2E2 carb on your car. It's a bit of a complex beast and a right pain if not setup exactly right. I've just swapped the carb on my gf's 1.6 driver for a refurbed 2E2 and it's a lot better now. There are things like idle solenoids and waxstat capsules on the carb that effect tickover depending on temperature one of those could have gone a bit wierd.
Go to the technical forum on this site:

http://www.vwmonline.co.uk/main/intro.asp

and search for pierburg 2E2 or driver carb etc and you will get loads of information regarding the various problems these carbs encounter. I also had a thread going in this section a while back about poor cold running with a pierburg 2E3 carb that had some links to more info in it if you can be bothered to look for it.

Hope this is more use than my last post!!!

Toby

It could be the carb.  I claened it last week with some spray stuff, while the engine was running.  I'll have a look to see if I can see any gunk in it anywhere or if theres an air leak or something.  Failing that I've seen a guy offering re-furbished 2e2 carbs on Ebay for ?100.

That's the guy I bought my refurbed carb off recently for ?100
Done the job on my gf's car, he managed to deliver it within two weeks.
If you're planning on keeping the car for any length of time though it may be worth paying the extra ?100 and going for the weber replacement.

I had this was a vacuum leak one of my pipes had disconnected itself!

The one in question went from the green cylinder to a y splitter, one end to the carb the other went to the inlet manifold.  Check all your vacuum pipes!

I take it you've looked at your choke pull down unit as these are notorious for failure
