yes its better than the 310 by far gossa, but for the money its well overpriced, the nav is poor & fiddly, there are far better systems out there for less money!!

I would rather have Xenons than a 510 next time anyways??

Yesterday I was test driving a Mini Cooper Works - and if you think the VW Sat Nav is fiddly, then you'd LOVE the Mini's one!
Its controlled by a little joystick and 2 buttons - which means inputting an address takes AGES!  The VW one is so simple in comparison with its touch screen.

As OEM systems go, the RNS510 is a fantastic bit of kit.  Yes, its overpriced from the factory, but a decent retrofit for around £550 is a bargain.  It has the advantage over many other OEM systems that it has a hard drive built in - and as a result you can still play CD's since you don't need a Nav DVD in all the time

Difference between the RCD310 and 510...
I don't think there is any sound differences - but the 510 has a built in 6 CD changer, the obvious Touch Screen which looks better and makes MP3 / iPod functionality much simpler.  It also has the ability to display optical parking sensors, climate control, and a reverse cam.  Well worth the £380 factory upgrade if you have no need for the RNS510.

The differences are listed here

The RNS510 as retrofit is a bargain. It is certainly on par if not better than any TomTom I have used. It is however let down by no audible POI alert, which means you aren't alerted to any speed cameras

As I have said before, I am setting mine up with a very espensive vinyl turntable. Analogue rules! The ACC is there to smooth the ride!

If its just for sound quality, then stick with the RCD310, as its the same sound processor.
I forgot to add the SD card onto my list of differences - but I guess that doesn't really matter.
I think the RCD510 just has a much nicer presence in the dash, and the screen is much more user friendly.

The RCD510 does have a better presence in the dash than the RCD310. Hooked up to the dynaudio package it's pretty impressive too and worth the money for factory fitted equipment.

Although my headunit has developed a fault where it turns itself on and off, repeatedly, just happened today for the first time....

One question: Is the RNS510's amplifier better and more powerful than that of the RCD310/510?

I'm pretty sure they're all the same.
The only way you get better sound from the factory options is to opt for the Dynaudio pack... or fit some aftermarket speakers / amps!
