Strange one
« on: 03 June 2010, 15:13 »
My car has too much steering lock, so much so that it's catching on the wishbones and brake pipes etc when on full lock. Only thing that i can think is that the steering arms have both been replaced at different times by the previous owner.... is it possible he's used the wrong arms, or does it sound like something else?

Sounds like one has been adjusted more than the other to get the steering wheel straight.

Story goes, when i got the car 1 arm had been changed previously. However the other arm had play in it so that was changed a few weeks after i bought the car. The car is better now both arms have been changed but the lock is excessive and grates on full lock in reverse. So i'm thinking originally the first arm fitted was the wrong one, and its improved a bit now a probable second wrong arm has been fitted on the other side - as at least they match up? If that makes sense

although the groaning noise only really happens on reverse full lock, driving forwards it hardly makes a sound

That is random because if it is the arms too long you would also have very bad tyre scrubon the out side of the tyres because of excess toe in /--\ and it would be the same with the wrong rack.
