total nightmare
« on: 02 June 2010, 16:23 »
So my beloved 1.8T which had just had a sh!t-ton of work and MOT done on it, was stolen a couple of weeks ago. It was found crashed backwards into a building with 'substantial rear damage'. Police said (even though it was found with the driver's side door open) that there was no evidence of theft and that it would probably go down as mechanical failure (on a car that's just gone through its MOT). Anyway, I went to see the car at the garage where it's being assessed to collect some personal belongings, one of which being the sat nav i keep in the glove box. Guess what...no sat nav! So the handbrake failed and the sat nav spontaneously combusted eh? Called the police and updated them, so now they're recognising it as a crime. Result, thinks I.

But no, I've just got off the phone with Direct Line who have kindly informed me that as no-one was caught and therefore there's no third-party to recover costs from, I will lose my 3 years' no claims bonus, and this will be marked down as a 'fault claim'! So some scrote decides to have a go at my pride and joy and I end up getting shafted on insurance premiums with a 'fault claim' on my records?! Are Direct Line allowed to do this? Seems very fishy/unfair to me!

Dont Direct Line claim to cover you and protect your no claims bonus against vandalism? I know this is actually theft in your case, but seems a bit harsh to loose your NCB???

I'm not sure; I'll have a good read through of all my documents and see if I can find anything that contradicts what they've been telling me. Losing my no-claims and having a 'fault' claim on my records is not something I particularly desire.

Well, the car was parked facing forwards uphill, and was found backed into a building further down the hill, hence their (pre me finding out my sat nav had been swiped) theory of mechnical/handbrake failure. They said there wasn't any evidence of forced entry and no damage inside, and they can't retrieve any prints from the interior anyway.

I think their current theory is that someone got in, took the sat nav from the glovebox and either botched a theft of the car, or maliciously let off the handbrake...

No CCTV, no eyewitnesses. :(
