Travelling abroad...
« on: 02 June 2010, 12:08 »
Hi all

I'm planning on driving through France in a few weeks time.

Any tips for this? Anytthing I should do before setting off?

Also, I've punched in my destination on my satnav which works beautifully. But once I get across the channel will it still work? Might be a stupid question but I don't want to rely on my builtin satnav only to find it is covered for UK only or something...!!!

Thanks

I just came back from a 6500km trip around europe myself. My car only had 1800km before the trip so I took it easy at the start although it was quite difficult to restrain myself on the autobahn...haha. RNS510 works and so did my Tomtom. Nice to have when strolling around.

I checked my tyre pressure and compensated for more weight due to luggage. Check oil, first aid kit, reflex vest, reflex triangle, tyre pressure on the reserve tyre. I also did a full waxing and cleaning before the journey. Remember to have travel insurance, tlf number to the VW road service. Passport is not needed but I prefer to bring it with me. Turn off anything that uses data on your phone if it's not needed.

Enjoy the trip!

Great reply, nice one. I'll do exactly that. Good tip on tyre pressure.

Cheers

I found this linky particularly helpful in planning my Dutch/German thrash:-

MKV GTI | Reflex Silver | 5-dr | Anthracite 17" | Manual | Highline MFD | Cruise | Revision 'D' DV | Dirty Pipes |

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

Yes, don't forget the high-visibility vest and warning triangle. The gendarmes over here love picking on helpless Brits if they aren't kitted out properly. Also be very careful of over-zealous driving on the motorways. The autoroute des Anglais (the one from Calais) is very straight and nearly always empty and it's very tempting to 'test' your car out. The police know this and there are mobile speed traps everywhere.
