Speedo 'Overlay'
« on: 01 June 2010, 17:23 »
Hello,

I have an Italian Polo TDI I'm looking to re-register in the UK. I understand from the DOT that I need to make the speedo read in MPH. Apparently, this can be done with an 'Overlay' - which I presume is a sticker or something that goes over the speedo.

Im trying to avoid spending over £300 by not replacing the whole speedo unit. VW dealers however, don't stock an 'Overlay' and can only offer to replace the whole unit or so they tell me.

Does anyone know where I might find an 'Overlay'

Many thanks in advance.

Thanks Forrest,

I think that might be just what Im looking for....

I have looked at changing the whole clock unit.

I guess my next step is to workout which is the easier job.

Thanks again

Its quite an easy job to be fair, takes about 1/2hr. There are plenty of threads on here with step by step pics of how to do it yourself. I imagine a garage will probably charge around £100.00

Anyway, hope that helps

Thanks Forest,

For the life of me I cant find the right thread - I must be looking in the wrong place.

Any pointers would be gratefully received.

Thanks

This is how you get the clocks out on a mk3 Golf.

really easy
no need to take the wheel off.
flick off the plastic dash cover next to the light switch, there press in the tag to take the switch out>
behind that there is a screw which holds the plastic surround for the clocks.
on the other side of the clock surround is blanking plate, flick that off and there will be another screw.
once that is removed you can take the surround out.
then either side of the clocks there are 2 more screws.
unscrew and tilt the clocks forward from the top.
unclip the wiring connector and there you have it
once the clocks are in your lap, take the glass off the front, carefully pop the needles off, put your new fascia on and reverse the above.
***NOTE be careful not to get mucky paw prints on the inside of your clock glass, they WILL show up, and it WILL annoy the hell out of you***

With a bit of luck, your Polo should be the same
