DSLR advice

I'm after one for long time and finally funds have been sorted to buy one. I do take pictures occassionally with my digital camera but I think now it's time to get better camera. I quite like canon EOS 1000D which is around £400 and then there is new EOS 550D which is double the price. (around £800)

Both are for beginners, which one will you recommend. One thing I need to know if I buy 1000D and at later stage if I buy better lenses, will it produce better results or shall I bite the bullet and invest in new 550D?

Buy a 500D if you want movie capability, or 450D if you don't want it.

Spend the money on glass.

You absolutely will NOT regret it.

The better glass produces sharper images, most contrasty images, less distortion, reduced artefacts, chromatic aberrations so on so on

General rule of thumb is glass can last you a lifetime, a body will last you a few years (3-5)

450D is around £498 i.e. body only. Keep in mind i'm beginner.

What about getting 1000D and investing in better lens afterwards, is it worth it?

Get a kit and a 50mm prime.

I have to say the *gulp* £600 I spent on the 10-20mm lens is easily the best money I've spent on photographic gear - the pleasure you will get from the glass is phenomenal (matron).

Seriously, don't focus on the body - just get a kit, of the brand you want and get something to spur your creativity - the prime will give you shallow depth of focus and pin-sharp portraits and a wide-angle just gives you..... well, MORE.  It turns pretty much anything into a cinematic image.  Dig back through this section and you'll see some comparison images I got.

one thing to be wary of is the lens supplied with the EOS 1000D

in the Canon budget range of lenses, the IS, image stabilised version of this lens is reputed to be much, much better. If you want to start with the EOS1000D, buy it with the IS version of the lens, or if they are not available together as a kit, buy them separately.

I get all my stuff from Jessops, they will price match or throw stuff in, they have great after sales and you don't have to worry about the body or glass being a grey import.
