anyone removed engine bash plate? / rattle..
« on: 11 December 2004, 16:55 »
rumour is there are bolts missing..

guy at the place that worked on it last told me "loads are missing from the sides and only the back ones are there" and that its what is rattling... not my exhaust

VW tell me there are 5 in total all round..

where do you mean mate...the heat shield or something else?? Thought there were about 3 or 4 bolts on the heat shield. I have a knocking sound on my exhaust when it is cold (before it expands presumably) but cant find the cause, guessing could be banging on the bracket half way down car which is just bolted to underside. Interested to know which bit you mean

if you've seen my thread on "you know who's" forum theres a pick of the "engine coverplate" as seems to be the correct term

Do ya mean the great big plastic piece that sits under the engine and is fixed to the front crossmember and at the sides?

If so - i'd say there are five bolts or sumthin like that. Only seen it removed once so not quite sure, but if so get it up on a ramp if ya can. Not an easy job crawling underneath!

yes thats the one! :)

from how the guy described it to me.. its only fixed at the cross member then.. and not at the sides at all.

should have been up on ramp sunday.. maybe saturday if the old boy aint working.

i'll pop into vw tomorrow and get a couple of the bolts from them.. there are def a few missing.. if they're cheap i'll just get 5..

what was confusing was that the guy that actually had worked on the car and had it up on the lifter in the workshop described that -lots- were missing down the sides.. it threw me when vdub told me there were only 5.

You might find the bit the bolts actually screw into might be missing, thats why the bolts have come out. zip ties work just as well.

just a thought. this happens on a lot of the veedubs, audi's etc.
